Bringing Home the Beacon: Series 4, Episode 16

Spell Baby, Aeryn. B-A-B-Y, Aeryn. A-B-C-D-E-F-G... Aeryn goes for her pulse pistol and WHAM! John's heart dies with the bioloid.

That had to be one of the most shocking scenes in Farscape. John was primed to question her given that his Aeryn had been learning English. It was their language. Their secret as was the baby (not so secret). And the Scarrens stole her from him. There John sat next to the cooling entrails of the not-Aeryn looking out into the universe without a clue where to find her.

Notice that John is wearing gloves again. He protects himself, he thinks, from harm but the universe keeps kneeing him in the groin. It'll take betraying himself and all he believes is right in the world to find her: promising wormholes for Aeryn to Scorpius. And from this point to his rescue of Aeryn on the way to Katratzi, John doesn't sleep, barely eats and can only wrack his brains where he heard the word Katrazi before and it was a fever-dream of an unrealized reality.

Ben plays John's grief, anger, fear and total loss through his posture and eyes. The last scene with him sitting next to the dead bioloid is another Emmy-worthy performance.
