Back And Back And Back To the Future: Series 1, Episode 5

When Farscape first began filming episodes they followed the Australian method which entailed shooting two episodes at a time. This episode and Thank Goodness It's Friday Again were filmed together. Luckily for Ben and the rest of the cast and crew, the showrunners discovered that such a project plan did not work with Farscape due to its heavy reliance on CGI, puppetry and practical effects.

From the fourth episode on, each episode was filmed individually over a seven to eight-day period with its special effects taking months more to accomplish. This is one reason why Brian Henson and Rockne S. O'Bannon needed at least a 13-episode commitment to begin filming. Luckily, SciFi Channel, Channel 9 of Australia and The Hallmark Company backed the filmmaking along with The Jim Henson Company.

The Commentary to this episode is very funny and describes how the guest actors were very creative with the actor playing the Illanic scientist having to sit very very still so that his heavy tentacles would not jiggle, thus he would fall asleep in his seat when not on camera. The female actress was not used to the physicality of Farscape and had a difficult time with the fight between herself and Claudia Black. In addition, the dark sexual scene with Ben looked like he was enjoying himself vs. the almost rape it was supposed to be portraying as John flashed forward in time.

It's also interesting that Ben's parents were in town during the filming of this episode and Ben said in the Commentary that he felt pretty silly waving his hand around in the Illanic ship because of course the green waves of the trapped black hole that shocked him were added in post production so there was nothing there.

It is interesting that this episode featured a trapped black hole given John's later meeting with the Ancients and their "gifting" him with the means to learn more about wormholes.
